Regular vanilla pudding no eggs

What if you want a vanilla pudding without eggs? Here it is:

Add to a pan:
2 cup milk
Using a gentle heat, bring it to almost a boil, stiffing if need be to keep it from burning.

Meanwhile – mix together in a small bowl
1/4 cup milk
3 tbsp corn starch
1⁄4 tsp salt

Take the pot off the flame until it has cooled slightly and is no longer boiling.

First add:
1/4 cup sugar, or more, according to how sweet you like it. You could add twice that if you like it really sweet. Then add the cornstarch mix.
Cook it until it thickens – but pay attention. Once it has boiled, then switch it off, let it cool a bit so it is no longer boiling, and add

1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp butter

Yum.
